For so many years of my life, I have looked at and admired Great Danes. So big and majestic! I have always said “I want a Dane so bad!” My husband would say “No way! We aren’t getting something that big!!”
Well…. after showing him pictures of puppies, he seemed to have changed his mind. He messaged a “breeder” and she sent a picture. Before you knew it, we were going to be owners of a Great Dane!
If I knew then what I know now, I would have done more research in the process of picking a breeder. To me at the time, a breeder was a breeder and I didn’t think it made a difference. So, if you are looking to add a Dane to your family, first I say… rescue, of course. But if you insist on going the route of a puppy, please do your research and find a reputable breeder.
At the end of April 2020, we officially adopted Eleanor (Ellie). She is our Covid baby.
As a new mom, I found myself joining some Great Dane Facebook pages, one of them being the meet-up page. I brought Ellie to her first meet. The first Great Dane Ellie got to meet was Cash. So kind of him to bring his owner Karla too. Since that day we have called Ellie, mini-Cash. After meeting Karla and knowing how much knowledge she had about the breed, I reached out to her from time to time (or a lot) to ask questions.
Through the next months Ellie and I went to other meet-ups and events and I eventually asked about volunteering. I filled out my application and was ambitious and ready to help in any way I could. The feeling I get after participating in any of the events, is amazing. It makes me want to be a part of so much more.
Recently it was posted, the board was seeking someone to fill the position of secretary. It was a no brainer for me! I wanted with everything in my heart to be a bigger part of this amazing organization.
They were also looking for members that were interested in being a part of the Fund-Raising Committee. I have put in so many years at the company I work for, assisting with fund raising and having that great feeling of helping out someone or something less fortunate.
So, I applied and accepted both roles. I look forward to this journey with these amazing humans and animals by my side!
